ISTE will extend its global reach this week when it sends representatives to Australia, Singapore, India, and Mexico to provide professional development to the winning schools of the 2009 HP Innovations in Education grants. ISTE has been doing professional development for this particular HP grant program in the United States and Canada since 2003, but this is the first time the organization will be taking its PD show on the road outside North America.

“It will be a whirlwind trip and an exciting opportunity to assist educators overseas with leadership and instructional innovation,” said Jayne James, ISTE’s senior director of education leadership.

In addition to James, other ISTE representatives include CEO Don Knezek, Deputy CEO Leslie Conery, Director of Professional Development Services Mark Andrews, and Project Manager Linda Keller. They will be taking along Flip video cams to record thoughts, impressions, and inspiring moments. Look for video posts here on ISTE Connects upon their return.

Some of the ISTE reps left this week for the first stop in Houston, Texas, where they will meet with 155 educators from the United States and Canada. Then members of the ISTE team will be off to Australia, India, Singapore, and Mexico.

At each stop ISTE representatives will meet with teams of educators and local mentors to offer tailored professional development in line with local education needs, focusing on systemic leadership involving technical support within the school and on inquiry- and project-based instruction.

The learning continues online long after the ISTE team leaves. As grantees meet objectives, local mentors in each country will offer guidance and feedback using ISTE’s online learning management system. The yearlong training will culminate in another site visit where ISTE representatives will talk about next steps and how to move forward.

ISTE will also be working with the participating schools to measure the impact.

The 2009 HP Innovations in Education grants allow 29 secondary schools/districts/boards in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Asia Pacific to launch innovation initiatives that support middle and high school administrators and teachers responsible for student success in math and science. The HP grant recipients will become a global network of secondary school educators around the world who are designing the future of secondary math/science education.
