What’s On Your Ed Tech Wish List?
Tuesday, December 22nd 2009 by Katie Stansberry
The holiday season is a magical time full of good cheer and plenty of high hopes for the coming year. Just for a moment, we’d like you to suspend reality and tell us what kind of educational technology gift you’d most like to receive for your classroom.
Whether it’s an iPhone for every student, a stocking stuffed full of the latest software, or eight nights of unlimited broadband, we want to know what would make your holiday wishes come true.
So forget about tight budgets, security issues, administrative nay-saying and hardware compliance issues. After all, if reindeer can fly and snowmen can spring to life, maybe there’s hope for a very techie New Year.

I would like broadband access at home. Unbelievable as it sounds, the area where I live does not have any high speed internet aside from high priced satellite. Please Santa, bring me high speed…
Thank you!

I would like a Promeathan board for my art room. At this point, the students could teach me how to use it. LOL Happy Holidays To All

I wish that Wiley would publish “Edtech for Dummies” and would send sample copies to my colleagues. Then maybe some of them would see that technology is not so difficult to introduce into the classroom.

At the top of my wish list is a new MacBook Pro for all of my students (and one for me). Happy holidays!

I would love to have a text capable student response system! To be able to expand beyond simple selective response, and let the students answer in text… what a joy it would be!

I’d like software from Tech4Learning. I could really utilize that in my tutoring of kids and adults. An extra large Wacom Intuos4 would be nice, too.

What I’d really like to see is a mindset change. Our district uses a filter and blocks so much informative content from teachers, as well as from students. How are we supposed to learn and grow as educators? How are we supposed to help students learn to be smart consumers of information in this environment when they can only experience it on their own at home?

The educational technology gift I’d like to see for all of the classrooms in our district wouldn’t be a piece of technology at all – it would be staff development on leveraging the technologies we already have. I would love to open the eyes of our administrators and teachers so they could see how even one computer and projector can transform the learning in a classroom. The implementation of project based learning approaches would be impactful for our teachers and students.
A close second wish would be a blogging/podcasting/teacher website solution that would allow authentic Web 2.0 interaction for our students and teachers while still providing for student privacy and safety.

It would be awesome for every classroom to have a mounted whiteboard and projector. The icing would be multiple response systems. While I am thankful for the resources that we have, having these items consistently available in the classroom gives my staff time to learn how to use and integrate this technology. Bring it on, Santa or the Tooth Fairy.

I would like to see our district pay more money and attention on speedy reliable internet access and less on specific software training and licensing. We’d be able to take advantage of many more free web 2.0 tools. Of course, that brings up the question of blocking and filtering which is a big problem, so I would hope for a change in philosophy, as well.

I would be thrilled if all of my students could have their own laptop with internet access available to them, this would make my teaching so much more productive. Not to mention it will cut down on the use of paper in the classroom.

I would like to see our students more engaged in their math and reading skills. I recently was introduced to a hand held computer (similar to a Nintendo DS) but this device teaches reading and math skills. The teacher loads the information for the students to work on in an independent manner. Students spend endless hours on these devices so why not engage them in something educational? It is called the TeacherMate and was introduced on The Today Show during the Christmas holidays. It looked awesome and I would love to have some for a class or several for small group centers.

I would love to have a document camera and Epson projector for my classroom. I can do just about everything I need with the camera- show a picture book, a math manipulative, or a science experiment. It is also easy to use. My building only has 2 to share among 20 classrooms, and I’d love one of my very own to use every day.
