Becoming a Balanced Blogger – Tips From Jared Goralnick @ WordCamp Mid-Atlantic
You may have already caught my previous post surrounding WordCamp Mid-Atlantic that featured Anil Dash’s keynote, which offered some tremendous insight about blogging and the state of the social web. I also had the opportunity to catch Jared Goralnick’s WordCamp presentation, “How to Be a Balanced Blogger,” and I want to share it with you. If your life is anything like mine, then you would love the chance to find some balance between your ravenous blogging habits and everything else. You might think you can sit in front of your computer 24/7 and crunch away at the keys to keep your audience pleased, but Jared warns us that not jumping back into the real world from time to time will lower the quality of your posts, not to mention adversely affect your personal life. If you would like to learn more about Jared Goralnick, you can check out his most recent blog post on TechnoTheory.com or follow him on Twitter @technotheory.

Thank you so much for coming, filming, and sharing this, Joe!!
As a bit of advice to anyone watching this: the first portion is more specific to blogging software and WordPress. The material that applies to everyone and is, in my opinion, the best stuff, starts at 24:30.
Enjoy, and thanks again, Joe!

Jared, thanks for the great presentation.
Just recently starting a blog I find alot of your tips very helpful. Especially the idea of taking the breaks often between work. Ive found myself working 6-7hrs at a time and I have noticed that my productivity decreases greatly over the last hour or so. Over the past couple of days Ive been taking more frequent breaks and I have found my work to be much more coherent. It works well and I will continue to apply this strategy to future work!

Jared recommends Ecto for a Mac blog writing and editing client. I would also look into Mars Edit as well.
I think Jared’s mentions of the mobile press plug-in, database backup plug-in, and a firefox time productivity plug-in should likewise potentially be helpful for bloggers.
The core of the first half of his talk seems to be creating a process whether its via plug in or web or desktop application. Additionally, he points to the purging your mind to start brainstorming onto paper or document.
Thanks for sharing this helpful video.

Just ran across this article on Knowledge Management which has some application on the distinction between knowledge and understanding by Daivd Weinberger:

In the same way blogging to blog isn’t “productive”, knowledge for knowledge sake isn’t always helpful in the education or business context.
What do folks think?
