Skype Hits The iPhone
If you are an iPhone junky like me then you probably already know that Apples App Store released Skype for the iPhone today. I downloaded the app in about 30 seconds this morning, logged into my account and placed a long distance Skype call from my office in DC to my parents land line in New Orleans. The connection was perfect and there was little to no difference between using the AT&T cell network and our office WIFI connection. The Skype interface is beautiful and intuitive something we’ve come to expect on the iPhone. You will have full access to your Skype profile, call history, Instant Messages and Skype contacts via 3G, EDGE, GPRS or WIFI connections. Skype calls can only be placed over a wireless connection which is disheartening, but understandable considering this would be threatening to many aspects of AT&T’s business model. So far using the application has been nothing short of wonderful; however many reviews in the App Store have been negative claiming that the application crashed their iPhone or deactivated it completely. The Skype app is also compatible with the iPod Touch giving that device some fresh bragging rights and yet another roll in the classroom. If you have any thoughts or first impressions about the new Skype app for the iPhone and iTouch please leave them below.

For some reason when I installed Skype it wouldn’t let me log into my account. I deleted it from my iPhone and downloaded it again, then it worked.
One disadvantage is like other apps, as far as I know, there is no background processing allowed. This means you have to have Skype open for the IM to work or to receive calls on it. I think the main reason for this is battery consumption: Apple doesn’t want background apps running besides the iPod because they could drain the battery too fast.
It is exciting to see Skype on the iPhone officially!

it sounds like my experience with the Skype iPhone app is abnormal considering it is working so well for me. I’m assuming that Skype is working on patches as we speak considering the problems many people are experiencing. Also I’ve heard rumors that the next iPhone update will include cut and paste (WOW!) and the ability for Apps to Pull and Push Data from the internet when they are not “running”.

I have had a fantastic experience with Skype on my iPhone so far today! It installed perfectly the first time, uploaded all of my contacts with images and my recent Skype chats. I was amazed at how instantly the Skype chats appeared on my iPhone–as soon as I typed them on my computer they were on my iPhone. I also love the feature that you can see what time it is for the people you want to contact. No more guessing whether it is middle of the night for them. :-) I’m loving it! I only had to sign in the first time and it remembers my sign in and automatically signs me in. So far, so good!

@ Peggy, it seems you and I are part of the small group of lucky Skype/iPhone users. I didn’t even notice the time zone feature, that is great!

So happy that we aren’t having the same problems as Germany! This is likely to become my favorite iphone app! Yesterday we had a skype conference call/chat for a group of about 8 people and it worked flawlessly with the chat updating instantly. I was using my MacBookPro to access Skype for the audio but following the chat on my iphone. My friend sitting beside me was following the chat on her iphone. Just wish it was available on 3G and not just wireless. Wireless was blocked for my friend at her work. I love this app!!
